Questions for Videos
How did the teacher make sure that the students were able to demonstrate their thinking, answer the question?
The classsroom environment was nonthreatening. This was accomplished because the teacher had established ground rules for the class before beginning. The teacher was very good at making sure all students opinions were valued by keeping a consistent tone in her voice and never infered her opinion about their responses. When students made comments she encouraged them to support their ideas and expand on them.
What are some features of the learning environment that support this questioning?
All students that were included in the discussion had materials in front of them to refernece during the discussion. Sitting in a circle where all students were visable and able to keep eye contact. Again the rules set in the beginning made for a safe sharing environment allowing them to be able to not fear giving a right or wrong answer.
How does asking higher order thinking questions and eliciting explanations improve students’ learning?
The student response had to be supported with evidence and therefore it opens new ideas and discussions for the entire class. Students were then able to piggy back off of one another. This also provides the teacher with data, showing him/her how students are thinking and at what levels.
